About the Campaign

The campaign against the constructing of Belene NPP is organised by environmental and other non-governmental organisations and Bulgarian citizens, united in the National Coalition “ NPP BeleNE!”.

The coalition is not a formal structure (it does not have a formal leadership) and the participation in it is voluntary as the participants discuss the positions and the decisions ad hoc. In some cases the right to express the common position is delegated to certain members of the coalition.

The goals of the coalitions are:

• Not allowing the constructing of the unnecessary, dangerous and expensive Belene NPP with public funds or guaranties;

• Bulgaria – free of radioactive waste;

• adopting and implementing of a new Bulgarian energy strategy which major goal would be the transition of the energy sector to “green energy” (the share of the renewable energy sources (RES) to be 60-70% by 2050) and in short-terms – to improve the energy efficiency, co-generation, RES (25% by 2015).

• in its participation on the liberalized energy market Bulgaria should not be turned into a “energy colony”, i.e. to export electricity, keeping all negatives – contaminations, threats for human health, risk of accidents and other problems of the nuclear industry, as well as the financial losses from the vicious cycle: import of primary energy sources – energy production – electricity export.

The National Coalition “NPP BeleNE!” works via:

• participation in the decision-making process around the construction of Belene NPP;

• preparing of positions, analysis and reports;

• court cases against the decisions of the administrative bodies;

• work with various social groups;

• lobbing

• participation in public debates;

• publications, documentaries and other media activities;

• cooperation with people, organizations and institutions from around the world which have similar goals in their own countries and regions.
