Termites are eating our forest. No, not the insects, but other ‘termites’ that turn wood into cash. The problem is on the public agenda again – after the revelation for illegal logging near the town of Velingrad, Bulgaria and the dismissal of the forestry employee who signaled the violation. This, however, is just one example of illegal practices.

Illegal logging and other unsustainable practices of forests and protected areas management were investigated by journalists from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania and Moldova during the summer of 2015. Their collaboration was part of a project completed by the BlueLink Foundation in Bulgaria.

The event took place on September 11-13, 2015 in Goritsa - a Black Sea coastal village near the popular wild camping beach Karadere.
