Study of environmental indicators and the carbon footprint of "STOMANA INDUSTRY" JSC - Pernik

An analytical study carried out by Dr. Iliyan Mitov, Eng., assessed the current environmental indicators and the carbon footprint of STOMANA INDUSTRIES JSC - Pernik and how far they correspond to the permits and licenses of the target installations and the best available techniques (BAT ) for the steel sector.

From the review of the documents for technical assessment and complex permits, no irregularities were found in the implementation of the procedure for issuing a complex permit to "STEEL INDUSTRIES" JSC - Pernik. According to the technical assessment and complex permits prepared by the competent authorities, the steel plant meets in all segments the conditions defined by the reference documents for the best available techniques (BAT). Although the steel plant is in close proximity to the town of Pernik, according to the data, it did not emit any unorganized emissions of harmful substances. Of course, the data submitted to the Regional Inspectorates of Environment and Water (RIEW) are from instantaneous measurements, and the enterprise must strive for real-time emissions measurement to get a clear picture of organized pollutant emissions.

In conclusion, the expert recommends "STEEL INDUSTRY" JSC - Pernik, if possible, to invest in its own photovoltaic system, which will reduce its electricity costs and bring it closer to the production of green steel.

The study was carried out by the BlueLink Foundation as part of an investigation into how well the steel industry in seven countries - the Czech Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary and Poland - adheres to the rules for environmental permits in those countries. The project was implemented by seven organizations from these countries with the financial support of the European Climate Foundation (ECF). The conclusions of the technical experts from the seven countries provide a basis for designing legal strategies to influence the decarbonisation pathways of the steel industry.
